What Is Bitter Melon? Benefits and Uses

Bitter melon is a tropical fruit and traditional botanical known for its intensely bitter flavor and distinctive ridged appearance. Scientifically known as Momordica charantia L., bitter melon is both a food and an important plant in traditional herbal practices throughout Asia, Africa, and other tropical regions.

Also called bitter gourd, balsam pear, bitter apple, karela, and several regional names, bitter melon belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family—the same botanical family that includes cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, melons, and gourds.

The plant produces yellow flowers followed by elongated fruits with an irregular, ridged or warty exterior.

Depending on the variety, bitter melon fruits may be:
